Sex workers in it for a quick buck

The Prostitutes Collective believes most sex workers simply use the industry to make a quick buck.

National Coordinator Catherine Healy says only a third of New Zealand's prostitutes use sex as a means to live. She says the remainder do not stay with the world's oldest profession for very long.

Ms Healy says one of the motivations for being in the profession is to have things they would not normally be able to afford. She says they earn up to $120 an hour, which can open up a lot of opportunities.

Ms Healy says about 20 per cent of sex workers have taken up tertiary study.

Dumped child's dad spoke of betrayal

Police were not too concerned at establishing how much force had been used to put him face down with hands and feet bound.

"They were particularly incensed about him abandoning the child," Mr Johnson said. "We didn't ask if he put up a struggle or if they did what was necessary to subdue him."

Mr Bender said the car was found in the car park of an adjacent apartment building. Xue had done nothing to change his appearance apart from opting for a crew cut.

If US authorities decide to declare Xue an undesirable alien, he could be on his way back to New Zealand within a week. Mr Bender said the two arresting officers were shocked when they learnt the full extent of the suspicions surrounding Xue.

"This is a once in a career type of thing for just about any officer," he said.

Outdoors Report: Prospects appear promising for razor clamming on ...

Conditions should be much improved with better weather when selected ocean beaches open for razor clam digging Friday through Monday.

On a three-day dig during the holidays, clam diggers had to contend with swells of 13 to 15 feet and the resulting rowdy surf. Nonetheless, many diggers achieved their 15-clam limits or close.

"Those iffy conditions scared off a fair number of folks," said Dan Ayres, state coastal shellfish biologist, "but those who came the first night did pretty well. The north end of Long Beach was good, Twin Harbors was good, Mockrocks was good."

You can take that to mean there is no lack of clams on most beaches. With the weekend forecast calling for showers, temperatures in the mid-40s and swells maxing out at 9 feet, digging should be a little easier, too.

Task force ramps up anti-gang efforts

ASHLAND — Sgt. Colby Staysa briefs the Alameda County Gang Suppression Unit as the four-man team prepares to hit the streets.

On this cool February evening, the unit plans to conduct "direct enforcement" operations in an attempt to keep a lid on gang activity in an area that encompasses Castro Valley, Cherryland, Ashland and San Lorenzo.

The unit, based in the Eden Township Substation in unincorporated San Leandro, was formed two years ago by Sheriff Greg Ahern. Eden Township Substation Commander Capt. Dale Amaral requested the formation of the unit to address increased gang activity.

On this evening, the unit will conduct parole and probation searches of known gang members who live or operate in the unincorporated areas of the county.

The team members are well-armed as they listen to Staysa's briefing.

2007's organization of the year

But Monday, they hit the jackpot.

The Rockies were selected organization of the year by Baseball America, which will present the award today during the winter meetings.

"This is more fulfilling than any award any of us could have won," general manager Dan O'Dowd said. "It affirms the efforts of the entire organization. It is recognition of the work everyone in the organization has done, from the business side to the baseball side.

"This is what our organization is about, the sum of the parts, not one individual."

A Rockies team that was a consensus pick to finish fourth or fifth in the National League West for the 10th consecutive season put on the strongest season-ending push in baseball history, claimed the NL wild card and swept its way to the pennant by knocking off Philadelphia in the NL Division Series and Arizona in the NL Championship Series before being swept by Boston in the World Series.
