MythBusters: 7 Tech Headaches—and How to Fix Them

Then, give us the option of adding the bells and whistles. There's another solution available to consumers: Switch to a Linux-based OS such as Ubuntu. Since most Linux OSs are free, there's no business reason to bloat up the system with feature frills. And high-tech companies—stop messing with us on your treadmill of upgrades while making the old stuff obsolete. It may be that any software company that didn't routinely upgrade its product would go out of business. But what if the rest of the world worked this way? Oh, I lost a sock. I need to get a whole new wardrobe because the replacement sock is version 2.0.1, and the stores now only sell version 2.0.3. Automobiles with obnoxious electronics. There are all sorts of things that are being built into cars that are really bugging a lot of us.

Horror accident subdues TV boss

HE didn't get Channel 7 to the top of the ratings without ruling with an iron fist, but network CEO David Leckie is now facing the gruelling possibility of losing half of his left index finger.

In a potentially debilitating situation for the Seven boss, Leckie will undergo a second operation on Tuesday to repair the damage done to his finger after it was virtually severed by his garage roller-door at his Eastern Suburbs home two weeks ago.

Leckie, accompanied by his wife Skye, hastily made his way to hospital, where he was rushed into emergency surgery in a bid to minimise the serious injury.

Doctors performed micro-surgery on the head honcho's finger, the top of which had almost been cut off.

But despite their best efforts, the badly damaged tissue is preventing the skin from grafting properly, forcing Leckie back into surgery next week.

Hemingway Makes Stage Début, His Intent Intact at Last

First came Mark Twain's "Is He Dead?," freshly dug out of the vault and adapted for Broadway by David Ives. And now the off-Broadway Mint Theater is mounting the first faithful production of "The Fifth Column," the only play by Ernest Hemingway.

The story of why "The Fifth Column" has been neglected is a complicated one, involving several mishaps, an inept Hollywood screenwriter, and a 1940 Broadway production of a bastardized version of the play.

"Ernest absolutely disinherited it and had nothing to do with it," Hemingway's biographer, A.E. Hotchner, said of the Broadway production. "I think he was glad when it closed prematurely."

Hemingway wrote "The Fifth Column" in 1937, when he was living at the Hotel Florida in Madrid, covering the Spanish Civil War for the North American Newspaper Alliance.

Labour's U-turn on company pensions was needed

Even if the long-awaited house price collapse arrives in 2008 - which I think unlikely at current interest rates and unemployment levels - the yield on this stock offers some comfort.

I offer this up more in a spirit of disclosure than recommendation. After last year's modest gains, you might think it a bit of a cheek to tip another share - and anyone who will lose sleep when prices fall should stick to deposits. After all, everyone seems agreed that there will be a fearful credit crisis in 2008 and anyone exposed to the housing market will suffer horribly. But sometimes the best time to buy shares is when you least feel like doing so.

WHAT'S SAUCE FOR THE GOOSE

Nationwide customers and staff can hardly be blamed for having a gander - and a good laugh - at the latest disclosures about all those computer discs with our confidential details that the Government keeps losing.

ELI CASH’S SHOW IS ALL MONEY

Live area music shows really come into their own when the bands are on, the crowd is stoked and the electricity crackles through the air.

On Nov. 17, the OneSixNine hosted one of those shows. The strange thing is that you never know as a listener, or as a musician, when shows like this will come together. Certainly, there was nothing in the air beforehand that portended anything of the sort.

But to paraphrase an old sports line, that is why they play the shows.

Performance volatility is common with up and coming bands. I mean, take a fancy band like Boston or Kansas or Loverboy and you know exactly what you're going to get on a nightly basis. But take some kids with a few loud amps and limitless dreams, and it can be feast or famine.

Frail admits Jambos may apply for the InterToto Cup

Since Frail was handed full control of team affairs they have shown signs of improvement, winning their last two league outings against Hibs and Aberdeen to keep alive their slim hopes. Pushing their way into the top six prior to the league split is the club's immediate priority before they attempt to close in on the teams further up the table. Prior to this afternoon's matches, Hearts were 11 points behind third-placed Dundee United and five behind Falkirk in sixth. And, while Frail admitted that the InterToto Cup is an option the Jambos are exploring, he assured supporters that he and the players would still be striving to reel in United."It's a possibility," said Frail when asked whether the club would be applying for the competition before the April 8 deadline."There is a good standard of opposition in the competition so it's something that the club will look at."We would have to start training a couple of weeks earlier but football is now 12 months of the year and the plus would be that we would have competitive games."We would have to look at the early start but it can take you into the season and the start of it is probably not far away from when we started last year."It sounds strange to say that we've not given up hope of getting into Europe either but if we can put a wee run together then we can kick on."We're not making any grand statement .
